Artists’ Biographies

In Paris of the 1920’s it was the talk of town. Today it has fallen into oblivion – the opera by French composer Darius Milhaud (1892–1974) and the American George Antheil (1900–1959). By incorporating popular music, daily sound effects and jazz elements they were able to contribute decisive impulses to the theatre of their time.
While the short opera “Le pauvre matelot” aims at the most extreme concentration of sound means and at reduction of the material, the bizarre one act titled “Venus in Africa” seeks to deploy traditions of musical theatre in an audacious and creative way.
